Kristen Stewart may not aspire to be a beauty icon, but her apparent willingness to experiment and don bold makeup looks surely has put her on that path. Her latest can’t-wait-to-copy countenance? A smoky, metallic blue eye on the September 2015 cover of Nylon.

The look was created by makeup artist Beau Nelson, who also works with Nina Dobrev and Nicole Richie. Of the impetus for this bold maquillage, he tells Pret-a-Reporter, “We always try to switch up her look. We had done blue shadow before but not quite like this, and Chanel has some amazing blues for fall.”
Additionally, Nelson took the fashion into consideration: “We looked at the clothes and saw that this look would help make the whole shoot look cool, especially when paired with undone hair.” As for the smoked-out shadow, quite a few products were employed.

Says Nelson, “I used the Chanel fall-collection quad and single shadow Les 4 Ombres in Tisse Jazz and Ombre Essentielle in Swing ($26), along with Ligne Graphique de Chanel ($34) to create this eye.” And a tip for at-home application: “Using the shadows in the quad wet creates more intensity.”

The look’s real surprise? That the gorgeous rosy lip color the actress is wearing is not a color at all, but the completely natural shade of her pout, enhanced with a little balm. It must be good being K.Stew.
