Getty ImagesLalo Schifrin, the Argentine composer behind the themes for Mission: Impossible, Mannix and Bullitt, has been named the recipient of this year’s Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award.
The award will be presented to Schifrin, 79, at the historic Wiener Konzerthaus in Vienna on Oct. 22. The Vienna Radio-Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Ice Age composer David Newman, will perform a selection of Schifrin’s compositions during the annual Hollywood in Vienna Concert, which celebrates classic and current masterpieces of film music.
Schifrin, a five-time Grammy Award winner and six-time Oscar nominee, has written more than 100 film and television scores. His résumé includes work for Cool Hand Luke, The Cincinnati Kid, The Amityville Horror, Enter the Dragon, four Dirty Harry films and more recently Abominable and the Rush Hour trilogy.
Max Steiner, a native of Vienna, scored such movie classics as King Kong, Gone With the Wind, Top Hat and Casablanca. He and Erich Wolfgang Korngold (The Adventures of Robin Hood) were among the European composers influential in “exporting” film music to the U.S. during a golden era in Hollywood.
“This means so very much to me because of the great legacy that this implies, especially because of its music history,” said Schifrin. “I am looking forward to working with the great David Newman and all of those who are involved in making this possible.”
The previous Steiner award honorees were John Barry, Howard Shore and Alan Silvestri.
