In response to the latest threats from the hackers attacking Sony Pictures and its film The Interview, Los Angeles Police Department chief Charlie Beck said Tuesday that his department would take “extra precautions” around movie theaters over the holidays.
“We take those threats very seriously and we will take extra precautions during the holidays and at theaters,” Beck said, according to City News Service. “We’re very aware of the controversy surrounding Sony studios so we’ll take that into account. I won’t get into the details of all of that, but suffice it to say we’re aware of it and we’ll take appropriate action.”
The Department of Homeland Security said earlier today that it has found no evidence of an active plot against movie theaters in the United States. However, the newest anonymous email sent by the hackers on Tuesday appears to threaten violence at public screenings of the movie. Citing 9/11, the hackers issued a warning and said, “We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places The Interview be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to.”
The Interview, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, is scheduled to open wide in theaters across the country on Christmas Day.
