Late-Night Hosts Skewer Toronto Mayor Rob Ford

TORONTO — You just knew Rob Ford confessing to smoking crack cocaine was going to land the embattled Toronto mayor back in the crosshairs of U.S. late-night comics.

Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel took turns Tuesday night to skewer the Canadian politician for not stepping down as his drug and alcohol use continues as the subject of a widening police investigation.

“I heard that your mayor Ford’s approval ratings went up after it came out that he smoked crack,” Stewart said, talking directly to Torontonians.

“You know what that makes you as a city, Toronto? Enablers, eh,” he added.

Urging the Toronto mayor to enter rehab, Stewart took a more serious tone as he made Ford the lead story for the second night in a row on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.

“Are you waiting for this man to hit rock bottom? I’m going to say this. I don’t know you, I don’t live in your city. Mayor Ford is a lot of fun to ridicule, but my guess is not a lot of fun to eulogize, and that’s where this thing is headed,” he insisted.

Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, mocked Ford for telling the media Tuesday that he had smoked crack cocaine during a “drunken stupor,” before going on to insist Toronto had no choice but to move on because the mayor couldn’t change the past.

“Rob Ford cannot change the past. He cannot even remember the past. I mean, what part of ‘drunken stupor’ does the media not understand?” Colbert joked.

Leno decided to take Ford at his word, as he joked on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno: “At least he had a good excuse. Here we all thought he was a cokehead or crackhead. Turns out he’s just a drunk.”

Fellow TV funnyman Letterman added during his own opening monologue on Late Night With David Letterman that the two New York mayoral candidates insisted during their campaigns that “they’re going to crack down on drugs,” while Ford “says he just wants crack.”

And Kimmel introduced a video segment that aimed to warn if other mayors were smoking crack cocaine to protect “other major cities from going through the same kind of embarrassment Toronto has been experiencing.”

The Jimmy Kimmel Live! spoof video showed milestones in Ford’s Toronto city hall reign, including walking into and getting hit on the beaker with a news camera, tumbling like Humpty Dumpty as he attempted to throw a football, and angrily yelling at the media gathered on his doorstep.
