Late-Night Hosts Take on the 2019 Met Gala’s “Ridiculous” Outfits

Naturally, late-night hosts couldn’t resist this year’s Met Gala, which, with its “camp” theme, brought out foil eyelashes, wigs and Katy Perry dressed as a chandelier.

The 71st annual gala took place Monday night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in honor of its Costume Institute’s latest exhibition, “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” and was attended by the likes of Kim Kardashian, Bella Hadid, Janelle Monae, Ryan Murphy, Lady Gaga, Zendaya and others.

Or, in the words of Jimmy Kimmel on ABC on Tuesday night: “This is a who’s who of ‘who the hell put you in that dress?'” He added, “The theme this year — they have theme every year — was, ‘People who have too much money.'”

The Jimmy Kimmel Live! host took aim at the outfits of Jared Leto, Kardashian, Harry Styles, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner, and said of Lady Gaga’s layered outfit, one of which required the help of some of her entourage. “Now I say if you need four grown adults to help you move, it’s not a dress anymore, it’s a couch at that point,” Kimmel joked.

Over on CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host imagined if “the paintings could speak” at the hallowed art museum because “the outfits were ridiculous.” An animated painting of a man in a pink outfit thus commented of Lady Gaga’s hot-pink ensemble, “Who was two thumbs and wore it better? This guy!”

A self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh said of Janelle Monae’s blinking-eye outfit, “Too many hats. Keep it simple. And while we’re at it, too many ears.”

A sculpture holding a severed head said of Jared Leto’s ensemble, “Hey, I wonder where you got that idea. Stop stealing my look.”

Daily Show host Trevor Noah attended the night previously and noted of the year’s theme, “This is my favorite thing about the Met Gala: No one knows what the thing is.” He added, “Imagine if everyone got invited to an event and got a different dress code. That’s what happens at the Met Gala.”

Noah noted that designer Zac Posen chastised him for wearing a tee shirt, “but then I turn, and Katy Perry was a hamburger.” (Perry donned the hamburger outfit for the afterparty.) “Then I was like, no, I’m not sure how this fashion thing works, but I’m pretty sure a hamburger is not better than a tee shirt.”
