Lawrence O’Donnell is staying put at MSNBC.
The Last Word host announced the news Wednesday and also shared his decision on social media.
Yes I will be saying hi to Rachel @maddow at 10pm for the foreseeable future. https://t.co/LKlkRTXL3F
— Lawrence O’Donnell (@Lawrence) June 1, 2017
The new deal comes less than a week before his contract at the cable news network was set to expire on June 4. News broke in May that O’Donnell and MSNBC had not yet come to terms on a new deal to keep him behind the desk at The Last Word.
O’Donnell addressed the situation, also on social media, on May 17. “I’ll let you know where you can watch me June 5 if it’s not msnbc. I’m sorry this situation has become public,” he added.
Keeping the primetime block of O’Donnell, Rachel Maddow and Chris Hayes, was no doubt a priority for MSNBC in light of the network’s recent ratings surge.
For the first time in 17 years, MSNBC’s Monday-to-Friday performance topped Fox News and CNN among adults ages 25-54. The Rachel Maddow Show, which leads into The Last Word, was the top cable news program. The Last Word also made the top five for the month of May among cable news programs, and ranks No. 2 behind Maddow at MSNBC.
Longtime network president Phil Griffin recently signed a new contract to remain at MSNBC amid the historic ratings.
O’Donnell, like Maddow, got his start on MSNBC filling in for former host Keith Olbermann before The Last Word launched in 2010.
