Sheryl Sandberg has recruited some of Hollywood’s biggest names for the newest aspect of her “Lean In” campaign, a “Together We Can” initiative launched on Thursday, promoting the act of women supporting other women.
In a video released in conjunction with the supportive endeavor, stars like Kerry Washington, Emma Watson, Lena Dunham, Eva Longoria, Megyn Kelly, Serena Williams and Selena Gomez pay tribute to the women who have supported them.
“I’m not sure what my life would look like if it were not for Shonda Rhimes,” said Washington about the Scandal creator. Emma Watson thanked Sofia Coppola for her guidance, saying Coppola “supported my work and she made me believe that I could do more.” Megyn Kelly said it’s been inspiring to have women support her, particularly in the past year. Williams thanked her sister and tennis partner Venus.
The initiative, with the tagline #LeanInTogether, strives to break the stereotype that women are rivals and not allies.
“When women lean in together we accomplish amazing things,” said Sandberg in the video.
“So many women are lending their voices to this campaign because they have benefited firsthand from the support of other women and know what a difference it can make,” said Sandberg in a press release.
“According to LeanIn.Org and McKinsey’s Women in the Workplace study, at the current pace it will take more than one hundred years to reach gender parity in the C-suite,” Sandberg continued. “We can’t wait that long for change, which is why women have to act now. When we support each other, we help level the playing field and get to equality more quickly.”
