LeBron James on Wednesday night expressed his sadness and anger after it was announced a Kentucky grand jury brought no charges against Louisville police officers who killed Breonna Taylor.
The Los Angeles Lakers superstar had been an outspoken proponent for murder charges against the officers who shot and killed Taylor in March during a drug raid gone wrong. The only charges brought forth were wanton endangerment against a fired officer for shooting into a home next to Taylor’s home.
Via several tweets, James did not hold back as to what was on his mind, beginning with, “I’ve been lost for words today! I’m devastated, hurt, sad, mad! We want Justice for Breonna yet justice was met for her neighbor’s apartment walls and not her beautiful life. Was I surprised at the verdict? Absolutely not but damnit. I was & still am hurt and heavy-hearted! I send my love to Breonna’s mother, family and friends! I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!!”
James continued, “The most DISRESPECTED person on earth is THE BLACK WOMAN! I promise you I’ll do my best to change this as much as I can and even more!! LOVE to you QUEENS all over this country and beyond!”
James concluded his thoughts by thanking all the Black women who have been a part of his life.
James was among the throng of stars and pro athletes who publicly responded to the case outcome. Former NBA player and current ESPN analyst Jalen Rose blasted the grand jury’s decision during the pregame of the Heat and Celtics playoff game. During the halftime report, Rose yelled “It would be a great day to arrest the cops that killed Breonna Taylor” prompting a cut to commercial. He had already noted in pregame that he wore his best suit just in case he got fired for what he was going to say about the situation.
