For about an hour on Friday, LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers jerseys were sold at the NBA Store in New York — but it was a mistake, and they were quickly pulled.
James recently announced his decision to join the Lakers on a four-year, $153.3 million contract, but the NBA superstar has not officially signed with the team yet. So, no jerseys should be sold.
“Due to tremendous fan interest, the LeBron James Lakers jerseys were prepared to be put on sale at the NBA Store upon an announcement by the team,” an NBA spokesperson told ESPN in a statement. “Mistakenly, they were placed on shelves prematurely.”
A number of lucky customers did snag one, ESPN reported.
Online presales for the jersey are permissible — and they have been going like hot cakes, with few sizes left on Fanatics.com.
It should be noted that the Lakers’ jersey style is changing this season, so the jerseys sold on Friday will not match what James wears on the court, according to ESPN. James will still wear No. 23.
