Lena Dunham is the new cover star for the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar, on which she’s seen half-covering her face with a black knit turtleneck. But beyond her cozy sweater, the Girls star strips down for her Bazaar editorial spread.

Dunham, who launched her Lenny email newsletter with Girls co-creator Jenni Konner in September, is seen topless, wearing only a necklace that reads: “Please do not handle.”
During her interview with Harper’s Bazaar executive editor Laura Brown, Dunham stated, “I know I’m not most moms’ idea of a role model, but I try to use the attention that comes with that wisely and not foolishly. Yes, I will tweet about my issues with underpants, but I also want to say things that matter. I don’t want to be out on the town spreading messages I can’t get behind.”

While Dunham always has used Twitter, as well as other forms of social media, to vocalize her thoughts and opinions, she recently admitted that she doesn’t look at Twitter anymore. “I tweet, but I do it through someone else,” she said on the podcast Re/code Decode. “I really appreciate that anybody follows me at all, and so I didn’t want to cut off my relationship to it completely, but it really, truly wasn’t a safe space for me.”
That was part of the reason she launched Lenny — because, as she explained to Brown, “There’s no shortage of stories of how Twitter and Instagram and Facebook, these incredible tools for self-expression, have also led to girls feeling ostracized, alone, slut-shamed. We just want to restore some semblance to safety.”
