The marathon title in this year's competition. Clocking in at three hours and 15 minutes, Ceylan's latest slow-burning drama will not be for the faint of heart, but the Turkish auteur has proven in the past he can deliver the goods. His last Cannes competition entry, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, won the 2011 Jury Grand Prix (an honor he also took in 2002 for Distant) and his 2008 feature Three Monkeys won Ceylan the director's prize. Many think Ceylan is overdue for the Palme d'Or and Winter Sleep might be the film to give it to him.

Turkey’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner Winter Sleep, from Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Russian festival favorite and foreign-language Oscar nominee Leviathan from Andrei Zvyagintsev and Lars von Trier‘s Nymphomaniac Director’s Cut are among the five nominees for the best European film honor at this year’s European Film Awards.
Also competing for the 27th annual award will be Pawel Pawlikowski’s Ida, which got the most nominations in major categories, and Force Majeure from Sweden’s Ruben Ostlund.
In the past two years, the winner of the best picture honor at the European Film Awards went on to win the Oscar for best foreign-language film. In 2014, that was Italy’s The Great Beauty, following Austria’s Amour the year before.
