Lionsgate and Bollywood star Anil Kapoor will co-produce a Hindi version of Red, the Summit Entertainment action-comedy that starred Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman.
The studio and Kapoor, operating through his production shingle AKFC Network, will remake Red for the Indian market, the companies announced Friday. The original Red movie, produced and released by Summit, earned $90 million domestically during its 2010 theatrical run.
Besides Willis and Freeman, Red starred John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban and Mary-Louise Parker and portrayed a former black-ops agent reassembling his old team in a last-ditch effort to uncover assailants and survive. Summit followed the original movie with Red 2 in 2013.
The Hindi-language remake of Red will be the first film jointly produced by Lionsgate and AKFC Network, and the studio’s second film in India after Brothers, a remake of Warrior. AKFC Network and Lionsgate are finalizing the cast for the Red remake, which is set to start production in August.
Besides his Bollywood fame, Kapoor’s Hollywood appearances have included roles in Slumdog Millionaire and Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol. The Bollywood actor is experienced at adapting Hollywood content for India.
In 2013, Kapoor’s production banner co-produced the Hindi version of Fox’s 24, in which he also starred as the Indian Jack Bauer, the counterterrorist agent played by Kiefer Sutherland in the original.
“We’re delighted to partner with our friend Anil Kapoor, a huge brand name with Indian audiences, in the remake of our box-office blockbuster Red,” Lionsgate executive vp international sales Wendy Reeds said in a statement.
Kapoor in his own statement said the Red remake was well-suited for the Indian marketplace. “This successful movie that boasts a huge multi-star cast is perfect for India as it has all the elements our audience loves — action, drama and comedy mounted on a huge canvas,” he said.
The deal for Red’s Indian makeover was negotiated by Rohit Tiwari at Morris Street Advisors, Lionsgate’s exclusive non-theatrical distribution agent in India.
