TORONTO – The digital Hunger Games have begun.
Lionsgate sold around 3.8 million DVD and Blu-ray units of The Hunger Games on its first weekend of release, the mini-studio reported Tuesday.
The first installment of the Hunger Games movie franchise debuted Friday night on DVD and Blu-ray as part of the Vancouver-based company’s biggest-ever home entertainment release, ahead of brisk sales on Saturday at the local big box retailer.

The result was the biggest first-day sales of any title on Zune Video on Xbox, and record Lionsgate revenue on iTunes.
“Our motion picture event of the year is translating into a home entertainment juggernaut that is already setting new digital records and demonstrating sustained playability similar to the film’s remarkable long-term box office performance,” Lionsgate executive VP and general manager of home entertainment Ron Schwartz said in a statement.
