Lionsgate has added to its presence in India by signing a content output deal with Sony Liv that includes its Lionsgate Play offering launching as a branded programming block on the SonyLIV streaming platform.
As the Hollywood studio continues to go over-the-top in India, Lionsgate Play will launch with over 500 hours of Starz and Lionsgate premium series. The initial lineup includes such Starz series as Power, Vida and The White Queen, along with Lionsgate titles including Crash, Manhattan, Wildfire, Are We There Yet? and Chasing Life.
The move follows Lionsgate setting up an office in Mumbai, with Rohit Jain as the managing director for India. Lionsgate last year also signed an exclusive deal to get such movie titles as La La Land and Power Rangers streamed by Indian audiences as part of an subscription VOD deal signed with Amazon Prime Video as it battles Netflix in India.
Now the studio is pacting on the TV side with SonyLIV, a local broadcast-owned OTT platform in India, and home to local hits like Indian Idol and Kaun Banega Crorepati (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire).
“Our collaboration is the latest milestone in elevating our brand in India, and we’re delighted to kick off our partnership with a robust portfolio of Lionsgate and Starz programming,” Jain said Thursday in a statement.
The Lionsgate and Starz content will be bundled within SonyLIV’s current slate of programming to bump up its English-language offerings to subscribers.
Starz has bowed or is set to launch its Starz Play channel in the U.K., Germany, Canada, Italy, France and Spain. And Lionsgate recently announced major content licensing agreements in Australia and Latin America.
“With over 500 hours of premium programming at launch, they [Lionsgate] bring to our platform a great mix of popular Starz original series and classic Lionsgate catalog titles sure to resonate with our customers for years to come,” SonyLIV business head Uday Sodhi added in his own statement.
