Little Big Town’s new song “Girl Crush” is reportedly being yanked from country radio stations over concerns that the song’s lyrics are too lesbian.
Alana Lynn, radio host at the Boise, Idaho country station 104.3 FM, told the Washington Post she received a flurry of calls and emails accusing her of “promoting the gay agenda” after playing the song, which is about a woman’s jealousy of her ex-boyfriend’s new love.
Lynn said listeners even threatened to boycott the station. As a result, she had to pull the song from her morning line-up.
Among the lyrics: “I want to taste her lips, yeah cause they taste like you / I want to drown myself in a bottle of her perfume / I want her long blond hair, I want her magic touch / Yeah cause maybe then, you’d want me just as much. . . I got a girl crush.”
The issue isn’t just affecting Idaho. According to the Washington Post, multiple radio stations across the country have pulled the song for similar reasons.
One Texas program director reportedly received the following complaint: “You are just promoting the gay agenda on your station, and I am changing the channel and never listening to you ever again!”
Bobby Bones, the host behind America’s most popular country morning show, interviewed Little Big Town last week, asking, “Is it frustrating to you that here is your song -— that is one of the Top 10 sellers for weeks and weeks and weeks — and people on the radio are still afraid to play it because they think it’s a ‘lesbian song?’” He added, “It would drive me insane!”
Singer Karen Fairchild responded, “Just the fact that we’re still discussing that, number one — there’s so many problems with that whole issue.”
“It shouldn’t even matter if it’s a lesbian song,” Bones said.
