On Friday, Michael Strahan’s four-year run as co-host on Live! With Kelly and Michael came to an end with a fond look back at his and co-host Kelly Ripa’s most memorable moments emceeing the daytime talk show.
But there’s been plenty of drama surrounding Live over just the past few weeks, starting with the news that Strahan would be leaving Live for a full-time job on Good Morning America. The news broke on April 19, after that day’s Live aired in New York, and was followed by Ripa taking an unexpected couple of days off.
After Ripa’s triumphant return the following Tuesday, Strahan made news again, this time with word that his final day on Live would be May 13, not sometime in the summer, as had been expected.
The next week, the duo won a Daytime Emmy for outstanding entertainment talk show hosts.
Relive all of the headlines below, and watch the video above for a longer look back at Ripa and Strahan’s highs and lows.
Tuesday, April 19: News breaks that Strahan is leaving Live for a full-time role on GMA, on which he has appeared twice a week since 2014 as a special correspondent. It’s expected that Strahan will begin his new job at GMA in September and exit Live over the summer. “I look forward to continuing to work with the incredible team at GMA. It is an exciting opportunity to be able to bring unique stories and voices to the audience,” Strahan said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter at the time. “My time with Live! With Kelly and Michael has been transformative, and my departure will be bittersweet. Kelly has been an unbelievable partner, and I am so thankful to her and the entire team. I am extremely grateful for the amazing support I’ve received from all of the fans.” It would later emerge that Ripa only found out about Strahan’s plans minutes before the news broke, in a morning meeting after that day’s Live.
Wednesday, April 20: Ripa is unexpectedly missing from that day’s Live, with Ana Gasteyer serving as guest co-host. Strahan simply said Ripa was “off today,” but it would later emerge that this would be the first of a couple of days off Ripa would take, in addition to a planned long weekend, to process the news. Meanwhile, Strahan poked fun at the level of coverage his move received, saying, “I was reading some stuff, and it sounded like I died. I’m like, ‘It’s not a eulogy, people.’ ” He then thanked everyone who had watched the show in the four years since he was named as Ripa’s full-time co-host, as well as the Live family. He also indicated that he wouldn’t rule out an occasional Live return after he leaves for his full-time GMA job in September. “I’m always available to guest co-host if I get a call because I consider myself to be a part of this family forever,” he said.
