Prolific producer Liz Gateley is moving back to the network side. The co-founder of ITV-controlled shingle DiGa has been named Lifetime’s new head of programming.
The exec vp gig marks a homecoming for Gateley. The Laguna Beach creator got her start on the network’s development team before her long tenure at MTV. She’ll report to Lifetime and A&E exec vp and GM Rob Sharenow.
“Liz has great passion and vision for the Lifetime brand,” said Sharenow, who expanded his jurisdiction to the A+E Networks flagship in February. “She started her career here, developing scripted and reality series, before moving to MTV, where she had an incredibly successful run transforming that network and the TV landscape in general with a string of genre-defining hits. She then went on to co-found her own production company, DiGa. She is a multiskilled executive who has proven to have an uncanny ability to home in on the zeitgeist and help define popular culture. I know she will be a great collaborator with my amazing team to help take Lifetime to the next level, across all platforms.”
Gateley essentially fills the void in programming brass left by Sharenow now pulling double duty. Her departure from DiGa leaves it in the hands of co-founder Tony DiSanto.
“I am so excited to return to Lifetime,” she said of the move. “It’s such a strong brand and one I know and love. Getting to work with Rob makes it even sweeter. Tony and I have had an amazing 13-year run, and we’re proud to have made history with shows that influenced a generation. As I join the incredibly talented Lifetime team and work to build on their great momentum, I know that DiGa is in great hands and has an amazing future, with four series greenlit in the past six months alone.”
She leaves behind a busy slate, which also includes current programming such as MTV scripted hit Teen Wolf. Perhaps best known for creating Laguna Beach (and spinoffs The Hills and The City), Gateley’s MTV tenure also included Teen Mom, 16 & Pregnant, Ridiculousness, Jersey Shore and America’s Best Dance Crew.
