The world of literary speculative fiction just got a little bit bigger with the news that former Tor Books editor Liz Gorinsky has founded Erewhon Books, a new prose publishing company focused on science fiction and fantasy.
Gorinsky, who has been nominated seven times in the prestigious Hugo Awards category Best Editor (Long Form) — she won in 2017 — will act as president and publisher of the new company. She will be joined by editorial assistant Jillian Feinberg and Peter Burri, founder of independent press The Experiment, who will serve as business advisor. Funding for the company will come from “families with over fifty years of publishing experience and are committed to the long-term growth of the company,” according to Erewhon, with distribution provided by Workman Publishing, home of Algonquin Books, publisher of Water for Elephants.
“I started to learn about science fiction and fantasy at Tor Books as an intern, but I’ve loved those genres ever since I started reading,” Gorinsky said in a statement. “I’ve been honored to publish many beautiful SF&F books that have been best-selling, award-nominated, critically acclaimed (or all three!), and I’m thrilled to carry on my work with the many great authors in this genre and build the special attention and individual approach that a boutique independent publisher can provide.”
At Tor, Gorinsky edited an author lineup that included Catherynne M. Valente, Annalee Newitz, Cherie Priest and Annihilation writer Jeff VanderMeer. The first releases from Erewhon Books are expected in 2020, with the publisher currently accepting submissions.
