Not long after dropping the new single, “Why You’d Call?” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and iLoveMakonnen, DJ Mustard — the mastermind behind hits such as “Don’t Tell ‘Em” by Jeremih featuring YG, “I’m Different” by 2 Chainz and “Rack City” by Tyga, among others — made his Lollapalooza debut on Friday.
“It’s my first time so I’m just excited to be in front of all these people, playing music and just partying with them,” Mustard (nee Dijon Isaiah McFarlane), who donned a Slayer tee and custom pants, told Pret-a-Reporter before performing on the Perry’s stage.
In addition to releasing the aforementioned track, the L.A. native released 10 Summers: The Mixtaple Vol. 1, which features artists Justine Skye, Ty Dolla $ign and Dom Kennedy, among others, on July 23. Although Mustard has worked with many chart-topping musicians (he’s reportedly in the studio with Britney Spears), there are still many artists he wants to work with that he hasn’t. On his list? Jay Z, Rihanna, Beyonce, Drake and Nicki Minaj, he said.
When Mustard isn’t creating catchy tunes (if you find yourself repeating “Yeah, I’m Different,” you’re not alone), Mustard has a knack for rocking the most luxe leather jackets (and pants) around — the proof is seen all over his Instagram.
So where does he find such fine hides? Well, if you’re as successful as Mustard, you get them tailor-made. (The same goes for his gold chains, which are designed by Ben Baller and the famed jeweler’s team, he said.)
“Mine are all custom. It’s by my homeboy Exclusive Game — he designs a lot of them,” he shared, adding that he also “just buys a lot of it from surplus stores.”
When he’s not donning a leather jacket, especially not during this weekend’s warm weather, Mustard noted that he sticks to “shirts and jeans, I don’t really want to get overdressed out here.”
