Lorde contributed a song to the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, but the 17-year-old singer will be much more involved in the music for the third film, Mockingjay – Part 1.
Lionsgate announced Thursday that Lorde will not only provide the first single for the album, but she’ll curate the entire soundtrack (available via Republic Records this fall) for the YA adaptation.
The “Royals” singer, who will hand-pick the artists for the album, met with director Francis Lawrence on the set of the film, according to the statement from Lionsgate.
“I was immediately struck by how she so innately understood what we, as both fans and filmmakers, were trying to accomplish with the film,” said Lawrence. “Her immense talent and keen understanding of Mockingjay’s characters and themes not only have enabled her to create a song of her own that completely captures the film’s essence, but her insight and passion for our project make her the perfect creative force to assemble the other songs on our soundtrack. I can’t wait to share what she’s done with the fans — it is truly remarkable.”
Mockingjay – Part 1 sees the return of stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson as their characters deal with leading a rebellion against the corrupt government. Based on Suzanne Collins’ third book, the film will be released in theaters on November 21.
“Curating the soundtrack for such a hotly anticipated film was a challenge, but I jumped at the chance,” said Lorde. “The cast and story are an inspiration for all musicians participating and, as someone with cinematic leanings, being privy to a different creative process has been a unique experience. I think the soundtrack is definitely going to surprise people.”
