The 17-year-old New Zealander, who skipped the red carpet, tweeted a photo from the makeup chair backstage just before the show with the message, “Feeling so good about tonight.” She was looking good, too, foregoing her signature curls for straightened tresses but staying congruent with her usual vamp look.
STORY: Things We Want: Lorde’s Dramatic Lipstick
There to prep the performer and winner of best pop solo and song of the year was MAC Cosmetics senior artist Amber Dreadon. The makeup artist said she wanted a fresh, radiant look that was a bit boyish and darkly cool with the lip as the focus.
The first step was a clean base, achieved with primer (MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance in Radiant Pink) and topped with Mineralize Moisture Foundation and Cream Color Base in Pearl, which is layered over foundation as a highlighter. Eyes were simple with Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Groundwork, a neutral taupe, on lids and Fluidline in Blacktrack to line the eyes. For the key element — the lips — Dreadon used the Lip Pencil in Vino, a creamy deep purple, and filled in with a duo of lipsticks: Cyber (a black-purple) and Heroine (a bright purple) — an appropriate choice for the Pure Heroine songstress.
