Lori Petty isn’t a fan of the Point Break remake.
The actress, who played Tyler in the 1991 Fox film, said of the upcoming reboot, “That’s some stupid shit right there.”
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the original action film has an FBI agent go undercover to infiltrate a crime ring of surfers and starred Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze and Gary Busey. The Fox film grossed $83 million worldwide in 1991 and went on to become a cult classic, inspiring a live stage version in which Johnny Utah is played by an audience member in each show.
“I think it’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” she told The Hollywood Reporter of the reboot at the Orange Is the New Black premiere on Thursday in New York City. “Really? Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Kathryn Bigelow — what are you gonna do? What are you thinking? Stupid!”
She knows she’s not alone in her stance. “Somebody tweeted this really cute picture of me [from the film], and it said, ‘What’s this pig board piece of shit?’ which is what I say to Keanu, but it was about the new movie. I’m like, ‘Seconded,'” she said of an Instagram post she shared when the new trailer hit the web last month.
“I got a phone call from my manager: ‘Why did you dis the new Point Break?’ Because that’s bullshit! That’s some stupid shit right there!”
Petty said she still hasn’t watched the trailer for the Ericson Core-directed reboot, which stars Luke Bracey as FBI Agent Johnny Utah and Edgar Ramirez as Bodhi. “It’s the most beautiful movie when you look at it — [Bigelow] is a painter, so every frame is so beautiful. No, I can’t do it.”
And she still keeps production memories close to her heart. “We shot all night once, and Keanu and I were laying on the beach, watching the sun rise while drinking a bottle of Cristal. We were like, ‘Dude, this is our life!'”
Warner Bros. will release Point Break on Dec. 25.
