ATP Concerts today announced that its Sept. 2012 I’ll Be Your Mirror festival co-curated by Afghan Whigs’ Greg Dulli and originally slated for Asbury Park, New Jersey, is relocating the event to Pier 36 in Manhattan.
A post on the ATP website said the decision to change the venue was “due to unavoidable logistical concerns (along with a lack of available fan accommodations in Asbury Park).”
In a statement, fest founder Barry Hogan said, “We sincerely apologize to those inconvenienced by the move and hope that any problems caused may be minimised by the relatively small distance between the two locations. Anyone who is unable to attend due to the move or due to the cancellation of Louis CK can claim a full refund by contacting their ticket agent between now and July 31st.”

Pier 36, which is a new venue located on the East River between the Manhattan & Williamsburg Bridges, was the intended home for I’ll Be Your Mirror beginning in 2013. In an email, Hogan noted that the new space is, “cool and is indoors and on the water and easy walking distance for Lowe East Side, like 10 mins from Ludlow and Rivington Streets on foot.”
Some of the artists slated to perform at this year’s festival subsequently had to cancel their ATP appearance due to the venue change. Those artists include, comedian Louis CK, Sharon Van Etten, Reigning Sound and Factory Floor.
Louis CK’s management said in a statement: “Louis CK who was originally scheduled for the Asbury Park event will not be performing at ATP in Manhattan due to scheduling conflicts. Check louisck.com for info about his tour schedule.”

New additions to the festival announced today, include: Philip Glass & Tyondai Braxton, Janeane Garofalo, Lightning Bolt, Lee Ranaldo, Chavez, Kurt Braunohler, Afterhours, Joseph Arthur, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Album Leaf, The Psychic Paramount, Braids, Tall Firs, Blanck Mass, Endless Boogie, Demdike Stare and DJ Jonathan Toubin.
For the last four years, ATP’s I’ll be Your Mirror festival was held in non-traditional venues within a few hours drive of New York City. First at Kutshers borscht belt resort from 2008-2010 and last year along Asbury Park’s boardwalk, the distance of the event from New York City enabled the fest to function as a sort of sleep-away camp while weeding out some of the trendiness and crowds other more accessible festivals attract. Elements such as guest co-curators including My Bloody Valentine and Jeff Mangun, readings by authors such as Luc Sante and Samantha Hunt, a dedicated film series hosted by the Criterion Collection and art exhibitions by such artists as Shepard Fairey made ATP both unique and an eminently user-friendly experience.
The down side for ATP’s promoters, however, was that the distance from NYC was perhaps one major reason the festival never completely sold out its entire weekend run. It did come close to selling out in 2008 when My Bloody Valentine re-united and curated the fest.
