The Orchard is now weighing how it will handle and release Louis C.K.’s I Love You, Daddy in the wake of allegations that he masturbated in front of numerous women.
“In light of the allegations concerning Louis C.K. referenced in today’s New York Times, we are cancelling tonight’s premiere of I Love You, Daddy. There is never a place for the behavior detailed in these allegations. As a result, we are giving careful consideration to the timing and release of the film and continuing to review the situation,” the indie distributor said Thursday in a statement.
The Orchard, which is set to release the dark comedy in select theaters Nov. 17, issued the statement shortly after the Times published its report.
Written by C.K. from a story he wrote with Vernon Chatman, I Love You, Daddy centers on a successful TV writer-producer (C.K.) who tries to prevent his 17-year-old daughter (Chloe Grace Moretz) from falling for a lecherous 68-year-old filmmaker (John Malkovich). Charlie Day, Edie Falco, Rose Byrne, Pamela Adlon, Ebonee Noel and Helen Hunt round out the cast.
Controversial dialogue appears throughout the film, including the use of the N-word by C.K.’s character and multiple jokes about child rape. The comic previously defended the inappropriate content to The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re depicting oxygen-rich people who live in these beautiful apartments and offices saying whatever they want,” he said. “Folks say shit to each other. You can’t think about the audience when you’re making the thing. If you do, you’re not giving them something that came out of your gut. You’ll be making something that you’re like, ‘Is this OK for you?'”
