John Lithgow and Alfred Molina play newlyweds in the upcoming romantic drama Love Is Strange.
Set in New York City, the film follows Ben (Lithgow) and George (Molina), who finally tie the knot after 39 years together. Their marriage leads George to lose his job as a music teacher at a Catholic school, however, and the couple is forced to live separately with friends.

The film is the first collaboration between Lithgow, 68, and Molina, 61, despite the pair’s friendship of over 20 years. It also stars Marisa Tomei, Cheyenne Jackson, Darren Burrows, Charlie Tahan, and Manny Perez as the couple’s friends.
It is the latest project from highly regarded indie director Ira Sachs (Keep the Lights On, Forty Shades of Blue) and was written by Sachs and his Lights co-writer Mauricio Zacharias.
It premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it was picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics and positively reviewed by The Hollywood Reporter. The film “get[s] the familiar humor and half-evoked memories that are so typical of long-term relationships exactly right,” critic Boyd van Hoeij wrote. “Lithgow and Molina are impressively tuned into the material and each other.”
Love Is Strange opens in limited release on Aug. 22.
