Lupita Nyong’o on Oscar Win: ‘Midnight Came and This Did Not Disappear’ (Video)

Lupita Nyong’o‘s best supporting actress win for 12 Years a Slave still hadn’t sunk in when she sat down with Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan of Live! With Kelly and Michael on Monday for her first talk-show interview since the Oscars.

But, alluding to the Cinderella-like nature of her night, the actress said that although the evening seemed like a fairy tale, nothing turned into a pumpkin at midnight.

“It has happened! Twelve midnight came and this did not disappear,” Nyong’o said of her Oscar, which she was still carrying when she returned to the Dolby Theatre for Live!‘s show.

Indeed, Nyong’o, who admitted she hadn’t slept since her win and had been partying, said that she had been “very selfish” about her trophy.

“For the first half of the night, I was being very, very selfish,” she explained. “I wouldn’t even let anyone else take a picture with it. No, no, no one was holding it.”

It seems she’s gotten less protective, though, because she was willing to let Strahan hold it for three seconds, but she counted and playfully snatched the award back when his time was up.

As for what she plans to do with her Oscar and the many other awards she’s won for her role in Slave, including SAG and Independent Spirit awards, Nyong’o joked that she might have to get a two-bedroom apartment and place the Oscar on the middle of a mantle.

Nyong’o also revealed whether she rehearsed her heartwarming, enthusiastic speech Sunday night.

“I just feel that with every nomination, I’ve just meditated on the things that I wanted to say,” she explained. “Of course, I don’t want to spend too much time committing it to memory or anything because then if it doesn’t happen, then you really feel the disappointment. But I’ve always thought about the things I want to say and the way in which I want to express my gratitude because it’s so deep, and gratitude is an emotion that’s so hard to articulate anyway, so I try and do my best to prepare.”
