Behind every great star is an even greater team of imagemakers. And in this case, 12 Years a Slave nominee and fashion “it” girl Lupita Nyong’o makes a strong case for the individuals on her beauty and style squad. Meet the folks behind the actress’ head-turning red-carpet appearances thus far.
THE STYLIST: Micaela Erlanger — who also styles Michelle Dockery — lives by the words of renowned costume designer Edith Head (according to her bio): “You can have anything you want in life, if you dress for it.” That statement seems fitting for Erlanger’s role as Nyong’o’s stylist, as she has helped the actress earn her fashion “it” girl title with her consistently beautiful looks on the carpet. When the Parsons grad isn’t busy running around pulling pieces for her client, she can be found jokingly transforming a curtain into a ball gown or noshing on colorful macarons. A sense of humor and good taste? Now, that sounds like our kind of girl.
THE MAKEUP ARTIST: Nick Barose — the makeup maven behind Nyong’o’s red-carpet beauty this awards season — is keeping mum about how he’ll be doing her Oscars makeup, but he did have this to share with Pret-a-Reporter over the phone: “I’ve been looking at old movies that have inspired me.… Since it’s for the Oscars, I want to pay homage [to classic films], but still make it fun and very Lupita.” Barose, who started his training as an assistant to famed makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin, has also worked with Amy Adams, Kerry Washington and Kate Mara. His favorite part about applying makeup for the Oscar nominee? “The great thing about Lupita is she’s so open-minded. She loves color, and color goes so well with her,” he said. And we agree.
THE MANICURIST: With clients like Jennifer Lawrence and Lady Gaga, Deborah Lippmann is the master of celebrity manis. So far, she’s helped Nyong’o enhance her digits with shimmering gold fingers at this year’s SAG Awards and perfectly nude nails at the Globes.
THE HAIRSTYLIST: Remember Nyong’o’s spiked do at this year’s Golden Globes? Thanks to her mane man Larry Sims, who also works with Gabrielle Union, the actress’ hair has gained recognition on the red carpet. As he preps for the Oscars on March 2, Sims says her hairstyle will depend on her gown. “We’ve narrowed it down to two different options. Depending on the dress they pick, we’ll know what kind of direction to go into,” he tells us over the phone. Sims added: “”The pressure is definitely on, but we’ve had a prep talk about not overthinking it.” Based on what we’ve seen so far, we think the team will be just fine.
