Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant accompanied the hit AMC series child star Kiernan Shipley (aka Sally Draper) at the Lucky FABB Conference in Santa Monica on Monday.
A surprisingly mature and well-spoken young lady, Shipka was asked by the group of beauty and fashion bloggers about what she wears on the show. “Sally’s style has evolved over the years,” she explains. “Sally started out with little girl bouffant dresses and now she leans towards the classic shift, cardigans, Peter Pan collars, lots of Mary Janes and saddle shoes. It’s all very preppy and very East Coast.”
She admits that working with Bryant on the show has inspired her to shop vintage, and she particularly loves vintage berets and hats with extravagant bows. Not surprisingly, she’s been bitten by the fashion design bug. Kiernan has already made three dresses but had to give away two of them. “But the time I sketched the dresses and went downtown to find the fabric and had them made, I had already grown out of them!”
Keirnan is an avid follower of StyleRookie.com. “I love Tavi (Gevinson). I think she’s awesome and because she’s not very much older than me, so I can relate. She has a quirky style and she proves that if you’re not afraid to be yourself, you can rock whatever style you want.”
As well as a recent appearance on the new TV series Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23, Kiernan also starred in a very funny viral Funny or Die video, in which she plays a child star psychologist counseling various child stars from Nolan Gould on Modern Family, to Eden Wood, the famous child beauty pageant star from Toddlers and Tiaras.
I really love doing comedy,” Shipka admits. “I love drama too, but I was excited to do more comedic acting. And especially to improv. That was really fun!”
Bryant gave us the best tip ever after the seminar — not only is her vintage-inspired Maidenform Lingerie line about to come, she’s just become a spokesman for a magical product called Downy Wrinkle Releaser.
“It’s amazing,” she says. “I hate ironing and I’m really bad at it. But you just spray this stuff on and it smoothes out all the wrinkles. And it comes in a travel size, so you can keep it your bag or pack it in your suitcase.”
