Lionsgate has once again topped the national home video sales chart with a film from comic Tyler Perry, Madea’s Big Happy Family. The urban comedy, which earned $53.4 million in theaters, put an end to Rio‘s four-week reign atop the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert.
The animated film from 20th Century Home Entertainment, with a $143.6 million theatrical take, slipped to No. 3 its fifth week in release, right behind another Fox release, season three of the TV show Sons of Anarchy, which debuted at No. 2 the week ending Sept. 4.

Rio is the second film to spend four weeks at No. 1 in more than a decade, Nielsen research shows. Avatar did it last year; before that, it was Walt Disney Studios’ The Emperor’s New Groove, back in May 2001.
Rio remained at No. 1 on Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, however, and also took the top spot on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart now that its 28-day holdback from Netflix and Redbox is over.
Madea’s Big Happy Family debuted at No. 2 on the rental chart and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, even though it generated just 9% of its unit sales from Blu-ray.
Sons of Anarchy was the week’s No. 2 Blu-ray Disc seller, with 17% of unit sales from Blu-ray. Rio generated 33% of its week-five sales from the high-definition format.
