Songs performed by Madonna, Mary J. Blige and Academy Award winner Bret McKenzie are in contention for the 2012 World Soundtrack Awards handed out at the Ghent International Film Festival.
The World Soundtrack Academy hands out awards in three categories: Film composer of the year; best original score of the year and best original song written directly for a film. Winners will be announced at the World Soundtrack Awards and concert on Oct. 20, the closing night of the Ghent International Film Festival.

The music of James Newton Howard will be performed at the 12th World Soundtrack Awards. Howard and Dirk Brossé will conduct the Brussels Philharmonic in a program of Howard’s work accompanied by film clips. Composer Pino Donaggio, a frequent collaborator of director Brian De Palma, will receive the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award at the event.
