Ellis Faas, created in 2009 by the famed makeup artist of the same name, is a brand with its products, from foundation and eye shadow to blush and lip color, all housed in sleek, silver bullet pens, that when pumped fill a brush or felt tip with what is quite possibly the smoothest, silkiest makeup formula in existence.
It’s this texture that Faas has been laser-focused on since the line’s inception and that has celebrities like Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Mia Wasikowska, all drawn to it.
“It becomes one with your skin right away,” says Faas of her super-luxe textures. “I always like makeup that looks like it’s been sitting there for a day. It looks best when it becomes one with your sweat. It’s more natural.”
Faas is based in Amsterdam, but was recently in Los Angeles for the Makeup Show, where she is promoting her line and a book of her own work — both makeup and photography — titled On the Edge of Beauty.
“The last time I was here was with Peter Lindbergh,” added the makeup artist of being in L.A. It’s hardly a name drop for Faas, who has worked with most every major fashion photographer and designer there is.
Discovered in 1999 by Mario Testino while working as a young makeup artist in Amsterdam, Faas’ international career quickly exploded, where she went on to be a go-to for Testino, Karl Lagerfeld, Jean-Paul Goude and Paolo Roversi. Paris Vogue also named Faas as one of the most influential makeup artists of her time.
Faas’ inspiration to create her eponymous line came as she sought more interesting colors and softer textures to work with. The vast color palette she has created is another reason why her celeb customers seek her out both on-set and -off — Ellis Faas was used on the recent Cinderella movie with Blanchett and Lily James.
Faas’ colors are based on hues already found within the human body, so every shade complements every skin color. Her best-selling Ellis Red is the color of blood and comes in three formulas – Creamy (classic opaque) ($35), Milky (stain) ($35) and Glazed (gloss) ($35).
“In order to be striking, a lipstick must take your skin tone into account,” Blanchett has said, “Ellis Faas is based on the colors that the body produces naturally. The important thing is finding the balance between the tone of your skin and the shades of makeup you choose.”
Like Blanchett’s skin already appears, Faas’ products work to create a flawless yet effortless face. Formulas are light and buildable and lend to being used on the go.
Each bullet pen fits into a larger silver cartridge ($35) that holds five pens total, for travel or a day-to-night workbag. Plus, the light texture of the lip gloss and blush make them interchangeable and easy to smudge around, adding an effortless pop of color to the face.

“Makeup should be on-the-go, not too precious,” says Faas. “Speed and messiness makes it more poetic and natural.”
