British Prime Minister Responds to “Appalling Terrorist Attack” at Ariana Grande Manchester Concert

British Prime Minister Theresa May has issued a statement after an explosion at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester on Monday night (May 22) killed at least 19 and injured 50.

“We are working to establish the full details of what is being treated by the police as an appalling terrorist attack. All our thoughts are with the victims and the families of those who have been affected,” said May in a statement, the Guardian reports.

Earlier, Greater Manchester Police said they are treating this as a “terrorist incident until police know otherwise.” Meanwhile, NBC reports, “Multiple U.S. officials say U.K. authorities suspect Manchester incident was conducted by a suicide bomber,” and according to CNN, the bomber’s body has now been identified.

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham tweeted his condolences to families who lost loved ones and praised the city’s emergency services, calling this a “terrible night for our great city.”

Minister of State for Security Ben Wallace issued a statement calling for vigilance and imploring citizens to report anything suspicious. “In the light of the attack in Manchester tonight, please be vigilant, and if you see anything suspicious call the anti-terrorist hotline: 0800 789123,” he said. “My thoughts are with all the victims of the incident tonight, and our emergency services, who are out there tending wounded and keeping us safe.” 

Campaigning in Britain’s national election has also been suspended. 

Prime Minister May canceled campaign events after the blast. She is due to chair a meeting of the government’s emergency committee, COBRA. Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron canceled a campaign tour to Gibraltar after the explosion.

Britons are due to go to the polls on June 8.
