Nathaniel JamesManny, a doc about boxing star Manny Pacquiao by directors Leon Gast (When We Were Kings) and Ryan Moore, took home the top audience award at the Reel Asian Film Festival in Toronto.
The feature sports film had its Canadian premiere at the country’s largest pan-Asian film festival after bowing at SXSW. Another doc about Korean shamanism, Manshin: Ten Thousand Spirits, by director Park Chan-kyong, earned the juried best feature film trophy.
And Nagraj Manjule’s Fandry, which earned the Grand Jury Prize for best feature at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, grabbed the best first feature prize at Reel Asian. The best Canadian feature award went to 90 Days, a Hong Kong-Canada-U.S.A co-production by director Timothy Yeung.
Reel Asian screened 45 movies from 11 countries, including the U.S., Canada, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, India and Japan.
