Hot on the heels of the news that Manolo Blahnik will be debuting a capsule collection of evening bags inspired by his most iconic shoe styles, we couldn’t help but think: What if the designer had made bags back in the Sex and the City days? No doubt Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), a self-proclaimed accessories aficionado (“Men, I may not know, but shoes, shoes I know.”) and Manolo-devotee would have flipped for his sparkly clutches as well.
Says Blahnik of his latest creations: “Every woman needs a jewel. Something very special and beautiful. There is nothing more stunning than a feminine hand holding a gem-like object.” We totally agree.
Here, a little fashion fantasy as Blahnik’s new satin and crepe de chine Swarovski crystal-accented clutches (prices range from $1,725 to $1,925) are matched up with some of Carrie Bradshaw’s most memorable Manolo heels.
1. Classic Black: The Laka Bag
On her first day at Vogue, Bradshaw finds the perfect pair in the magazine’s fashion closet: “Oh my God! Do you know what these are? Manolo Blahnik Mary Janes! I thought these were an urban shoe myth!”
2. Hello, Lover: The Kana Bag
When Bradshaw gets robbed at gunpoint, the mugger takes her Fendi Baguette and her Manolos: “Please, sir, they’re my favorite pair!”
3. Enviable Emerald: The Nadi Bag
Bradshaw is asked to walk the runway in a fashion show for charity and she insists: “Feel free to put me in big shoes.” Fast-forward to her epic face-plant and “fashion roadkill” moment.
3. Mirror, Mirror: The Borla Bag
Bradshaw has no luck at a baby-shower when the host makes everybody take off their shoes and her Manolos get lost in the mix. She’s offered a $200 financial compensation, but bemoans that fact that singles don’t get gifts after graduation like married friends and those with kids. Bradshaw ends up deciding to “marry herself” and sends her friend an invite along with her gift registry: One pair of silver open-toed Manolos. “The fact is, sometimes it’s really hard to walk in a single woman’s shoes. That’s why we need really special ones now and then to make the walk a little more fun.”
5. Something Borrowed, Something Blue: The Hangi Bag
When Mr. Big proposes in the SATC movie, he seals the deal with a pair of blue satin crystal-encrusted Manolos. Said Bradshaw: “And we were dressed from head to toe in love … the only label that never goes out of style.”
