The New York designer was said to have hated Paris when he moved there in 1997 to head Louis Vuitton. He now spends far less time in NYC, preferring his modern-art-filled Saint Germain apartment.

Louis Vuitton designer Marc Jacobs is rumored to be taking over the position of recently fired John Galliano at Dior, reports Women’s Wear Daily.
Galliano was removed from his position due to his barrage of anti-Semitic remarks and subsequent arrest at a bar in Paris in February. Since his departure in early March, fashion conglomerate LVHM, which owns both Dior and Louis Vuitton, has been searching for major bankable names to fill the gap. Galliano’s right-hand man Bill Gaytten has been designing for the label in the interim, but but his Dior couture show in July was poorly received.
Jacobs was named as artistic director at Louis Vuitton in 1997 and it is reported that discussions on the renewal of his contract, which is due to terminate this fall, have now been delayed awaiting the Dior talks. If Jacobs were to move to Dior, it is expected that his business partner Robert Duffy would also make the move.
There have been several other names said to have been discussed by LVMH chief executive Bernard Arnault, including Sarah Burton, the creative director of Alexander McQueen, whose name surfaced soon after she designed Kate Middleton‘s wedding dress in April. According to Women’s Wear Daily, she rebuffed overtures from LVMH. Other possibilities have included Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz, Balenciaga’s Nicolas Ghesquière, and Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci.
Cathy Horyn, fashion journalist for the New York Times, said in an interview with New York Magazine fashion blog The Cut that she is “not at all surprised LVMH executives are talking to Marc Jacobs about moving from Louis Vuitton to Dior. Not to disparage Mr. Jacobs’ talents, but where else can they look?” Despite the lack of more famous designers, the fashion journalist suggested some lesser-known candidates: Jil Sander designer Raf Simons, Mugler womenswear designer Sébastien Peigné, who worked at Balenciaga for eight years, and Christopher Kane, who is working at Versace designing that label’s Versus line.
The report is being enthusiastically greeted today by WWD editor Bridget Foley who writes: “Just do it, as they say at Nike … There is, quite simply, no one better suited to assume the mantle of the house.”
When Jacobs was asked if he was gunning for Galliano’s job at Dior at his last Vuitton show he said, “I haven’t been asked.” Meetings are reportedly scheduled to take place between legal representatives for Jacobs and officials from Dior this week in Paris.
