Marchesa, the fashion label co-founded in 2004 by Harvey Weinstein’s now-estranged wife, Georgina Chapman, is returning to the New York Fashion Week runway on Feb. 14 at 4 p.m., just ahead of the Marc Jacobs show. The brand’s last presentation was during Bridal Week in Manhattan on the same day that The New York Times published the exposé that led to his termination.
Since the Times published the allegations of multiple women who said that the disgraced movie producer sexually harassed, and in some cases, assaulted them over the past 25 years, Chapman has separated from her husband of 10 years.
Marchesa’s upcoming NYFW presentation will be the company’s first since the scandal and Weinstein’s subsequent highly public fall from grace.
In the weeks following publication of the Times article, Chapman’s name was making headlines not just for her relationship to Weinstein, but because of his significant influence on the growth of Marchesa from a fledgling label into brand favored by Hollywood’s hottest stars. Felicity Huffman confirmed that Weinstein leveraged his power to compel her to wear his wife’s designs while promoting the Weinstein Co.-produced film Transamerica. Cate Blanchett and Renee Zellwegger are among the other A-list stars who wore the brand while promoting Weinstein’s films, all while Marchesa was still in its infancy.
As part of the backlash to Weinstein’s association to Marchesa, the jeweler Helzberg Diamonds dropped its engagement ring collaboration with the fashion label. A Hollywood stylist, who wished to remain anonymous, also told The Hollywood Reporter that “no star is ever going to want to wear the brand again.”
But despite the public outcry and deeper investigations into Weinstein’s role in the growth of Marchesa, retailers like Neiman Marcus and independent bridal boutiques claim that the brand’s business has not been affected by the scandal. Said Ken Downing, senior vp of fashion at Neiman Marcus, “My Marchesa business is fantastic.”
