Considering how incredibly glamorous her embellished Tom Ford gown was, one might expect Margot Robbie to go full on with her makeup. But, says makeup artist Tyron Machhausen, the references that played into creating the look were actually quite casual in nature.
“The inspiration was a little bit Margaux Hemingway, super fresh, like those amazing images of her coming from the beach,” he tells Pret-a-Reporter. “The dress is very elaborate — it’s an absolute showstopper, it’s sensational — so we wanted to contrast it with an easy, effortless look, basically coming from the beach and throwing on this amazing gown, and there she goes.”
The goal was sun-kissed, not made up. That aesthetic extended to her hair, too, which was down in subtle waves. To achieve that natural look, Machhausen kept the makeup to a minimum, quite a departure from last year’s bombshell vibe. “She’s young and gorgeous, so I didn’t want to overplay that with makeup. We didn’t go for a dramatic look the way we did last time. Today we wanted to showcase her as a person.”
He used Revive Intense Creme Luster Day ($385) to prep her skin, applying it alongside a face massage to get her blood moving. Then, to get the bronzy, glowing skin that looked fresh from the beach, a la the model inspiration, he used Laura Mercier Foundation Primer Radiance ($36) and Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation ($48) — a blend of two shades.
“Key is really massaging and working with the product, blending it. I love using my fingers and working in the product, and warming up the foundation so it really melts in.” Machhausen kept the eye makeup light, too, just using a bit of Tom Ford Cream cream shadow followed by mascara. Lastly, Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour in Sensual ($28) finished off Robbie’s fresh, barely there look.
