You don’t often see rabbits in foxholes.
In the latest (live action!) trailer for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, the crossover strategy/platforming hyrbrid that combines Nintendo and Ubisoft’s most well-known characters, the action goes to a bombed-out warzone. Soldiers grittily bear down and advance the line in what (at first) appears to be the latest trailer for the upcoming Call of Duty game.
As our hero crouches down in a bunker, gun poised at the ready to charge the enemy line, he turns to his comrade for cover fire. “Spray anything that moves,” he says before launching out into the fray, weapon raised.
It is then revealed that his bunkermate is less intimidating and battleworn than expected — it’s a fluffy white rabbit in fatigues and a helmet with a gun propped up in front of him. As we hear our hero get shot and flop on the ground, the text, “Not everyone can team up with a rabbit” is shown onscreen as our flopsy friend hops a hasty retreat.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a mash-up that sees the famous Italian plumber teaming up with Ubisoft’s lovable — and deranged — Rabbids to save the Mushroom Kingdom. The game combines strategic, turn based RTS gameplay with Mario-style platforming.
The game, which won the Game Critics Award at this year’s E3, hits stores Aug. 29.
