Indie studio Entertainment One is going all-in with Mark Gordon.
eOne on Monday named the veteran Hollywood producer as president and chief content officer for film, television and digital, leading all creative units. The move follows eOne agreeing to acquire, pending shareholder approval, the remaining 49 percent of The Mark Gordon Company that it didn’t already own for $209 million.
As part of a major management shuffle, Steve Bertram has been named president, film, TV and digital, overseeing all commercial and distribution operations. And John Morayniss, who led eOne’s TV business since its launch in 2008, is stepping down after a transition.
The shift in creative leadership, announced by eOne CEO Darren Throop, comes three years after eOne and The Mark Gordon Company unveiled a partnership to create a new independent studio that would finance and produce film, network, cable and digital premium content, which eOne would distribute internationally.
At the time, Gordon abandoned his long-term production deal with ABC Studios, where he made such shows as Grey’s Anatomy and Criminal Minds, and sold 51 percent of The Mark Gordon Company to eOne for a reported $133 million.
From 2015, Gordon led the new Los Angeles-based studio as CEO and continued to produce content for The Mark Gordon Company, as well as finance projects by other producers. MGC is behind such other TV hits as Ray Donovan and Designated Survivor, and Gordon has helped produce box-office hits including Speed, The Day After Tomorrow and Saving Private Ryan.
“Mark Gordon is one of the industry’s most accomplished film and television producers with a long track record of success and commitment to putting talent first. Mark’s leadership over content creation across eOne underscores our vision to be the preeminent platform-agnostic content company in the world,” Throop said Monday in a statement after unveiling wide-ranging creative changes at his Toronto-based company.
Gordon’s ascendancy at eOne follows the veteran producer coming off two major movies: Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut Molly’s Game and a remake of Murder on the Orient Express.
Gordon in his own statement said he saw eOne expanding both domestically and internationally on the content front. “Ultimately, it is the creative partnerships with producers, writers, directors and actors that will bring us success. It is our mission to provide them the opportunity to tell great stories and to be financially rewarded for their work,” he said.
