The estate of Marlon Brando has signed with APA for licensing, endorsements and publishing, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.
Recent uses of the cinematic icon’s rights include this year’s Sundance documentary Listen to Me, Marlon, featuring narration from the actor himself and directed by Stevan Riley. The film was produced by Passion Pictures’ John Battsek (Searching for Sugar Man) and will be released theatrically at the end of July before airing on Showtime in the fall. Meanwhile, last summer the eco-luxury resort The Brando opened on Tetiaroa, the French Polynesian island owned by Brando.
“We look forward to working with APA on initiatives across numerous categories,” Brando trustees Mike Medavoy, Avra Douglas and Larry Dressler said in a joint statement. “Their success in strategic and authentic brand extensions and integrations was exactly what we’re looking for as we continue to build on Brando’s extraordinary legacy.”
The agency signing comes at a time when Brando Enterprises, the company that manages the late actor’s estate, recently unearthed a considerable collection of his assets, including personal letters, audio recordings, art and personal photos. APA’s branded lifestyle department, considered one of the top such divisions in the industry, will work with BE to identify strategic endorsement and alliance opportunities to support Brando’s legacy, starting with collaborations to promote Listen to Me, Marlon as well as potential partnerships for the hotel.
“Marlon Brando is one of the most significant icons of the 20th century,” APA branding and digital head Brian Dow said in a statement. “We’re thrilled and honored to be part of the team bringing his important social and cultural sensibilities to a whole new generation.”
