LONDON – Oscar winner Martin Scorsese is to be honored with a BAFTA fellowship, the highest accolade the British Academy dishes out.
Scorsese’s award is scheduled to be presented to him during this year’s Orange British Academy Film Awards ceremony on Feb. 12 this year in London.

Awarded annually by BAFTA, the Fellowship is given to an individual by the British Academy of Film, Television and Arts in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film.
Scorsese joins a roster of recipients including Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Sean Connery, Elizabeth Taylor, Stanley Kubrick, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Judi Dench and Vanessa Redgrave.
Christopher Lee received the Fellowship at the BAFTA’s film awards in 2011.
Scorsese described the Fellowship as “a great honor.”
The filmmaker, producer and screenwriter has been nominated by BAFTA nine times, garnering three wins in 1991 for Goodfellas in the best director, best film and best adapted screenplay categories.
Scorsese is also the founder and chair of two non-profit organizations dedicated to the preservation and protection of motion picture history: The Film Foundation and the World Cinema Foundation.?
The nominations for the Orange British Academy Film Awards will be announced Jan. 17.
The ceremony, broadcast by the BBC in the U.K., will be held on Feb. 12 and hosted by Stephen Fry.
