Next year marks the 80th anniversary of the release of Marvel Comics No. 1, and to celebrate, Marvel Entertainment has announced a new, eight-volume series of collected editions highlighting the history of the company to the present day.
Each volume of the series, titled Decades, will — as the name suggests — feature stories taken from a 10-year-period of Marvel’s output alongside commentary tracing the history of the company in context of the pop culture and political events from the time. Volumes will be released on a monthly basis, starting with Decades: Marvel in the ’40s — The Human Torch vs. The Sub-Mariner; Decades: Marvel in the ’50s — Captain America Strikes!; Decades: Marvel in the ’60s — Spider-Man Meets The Marvel Universe; and Marvel in the ’70s — Legion of Monsters.
“After almost 80 years, our fans have continued to embrace Marvel’s characters as their own, following their adventures through decades of thrilling stories,” Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski said in a statement. “To honor and celebrate this legacy, we can’t wait to share some new and exciting projects for the world to experience the history of the Marvel Universe — through comic books, video games, toys, blockbuster films, television shows and more.”
The company also teased “more exciting announcements around Marvel’s 80th anniversary celebration” to be announced in the coming months.
