With Marvel’s comic book relaunch beginning with this week’s release of Marvel Legacy No. 1, details are starting to emerge about a new direction for the company’s lead franchise, the Avengers. Up first: the seeming cancellation of two titles in the franchise.
As revealed in the first issue of FOOM, a new promotional magazine published by Marvel, both U.S.Avengers and Uncanny Avengers will come to an end in December, with the creative teams of those series being folded into the team working on the Avengers comic book, which will increase its frequency to weekly with January’s Avengers No. 675.
That issue sees the beginning of a three-month storyline, “Avengers: No Surrender,” which Mark Waid — one of three writers alongside Al Ewing and Jim Zub — describes as “half celebration, half wake” for the team’s history. The full lineup of characters who will appear as part of the storyline has yet to be revealed, but FOOM teases founding members of the team alongside current members of the multiple Avengers teams and all-new characters created for this story.
Artists on the storyline will be Pepe Larraz, Kim Jacinto, and Paco Medina, with each illustrating a month of issues.
It is currently unclear whether or not Avengers will remain a weekly title beyond the “No Surrender” storyline, or if U.S.Avengers or Uncanny Avengers will restart publication at a later date. Marvel says more details will be announced soon.
Both Marvel Legacy No. 1 and FOOM No. 1 will be available Wednesday.
