Matt Damon may not have won best actor at the Oscars on Sunday night, but he got a late-night consolation prize.
After years of trying to appear on Jimmy Kimmel’s show (the long-running joke is that Damon was constantly getting bumped for other stars or Kimmel’s favorite, Ben Affleck), The Martian star finally made it onto Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Affleck was the first guest in the post-Oscars special and he arrived with some conspicuous padding under his jacket. After showing a new clip from the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Affleck told Kimmel that he let himself go after working out so much for a superhero movie.
“I didn’t think this was going to be about body-shaming tonight,” he told the late-night host.
But Kimmel quickly found out that it wasn’t a fat suit when Affleck unbuttoned his coat to reveal Damon hiding inside. He popped out of Affleck’s jacket, red in the face and short of breath, much to Kimmel’s surprise.
“I’m upset with you more than him about this,” Kimmel told Affleck. “This is NOT a guest appearance!”
“This feels amazing!” Damon said, as the audience cheered him on.
“You’re ruining the Oscars show. Nobody wants you here!” Kimmel yelled, but the audience had turned on him, cheering even louder for Damon. “This is breaking and entering,” he told Damon. “I could have you arrested for this.”
“I was actually nominated for an Oscar and I can’t get on the Oscar show?” Damon asked, before getting carted off stage. But in the end, he did make it to a guest chair.
Damon has a long history of trying to get on Kimmel’s show, which includes a night where Damon took over his show after Kimmel “ran out of time” for him one last time.
And, of course, there was the video battle between Kimmel and his then-girlfriend Sarah Silverman.
