The Dallas Buyers Club star on how acting differs from other professions: "Sets aren't places where we can all get along — we don't have to. Is it supposed to be easy? No, it's not supposed to be easy. I mean, the first audition I had with [Richard] Linklater, Dazed and Confused, that was a job interview for me, right? So I tucked in my shirt, man, shaved my hair, pressed my jeans and went in 'cause it was a job interview. And he was like: 'Hey, OK. Let your hair grow out, and maybe, uh …' And I was like, 'I can do that?' (Laughs.)"

McConaughey will accept his accolade at the Jan. 4 awards gala, hosted by Mary Hart.
“Matthew McConaughey is the rare actor who effortlessly moves between cinematic genres. From drama to thrillers to romantic comedies, he captivates audiences with the depth and range of his performances,” Harold Matzner, Palm Springs International Film Festival chairman, said in a statement. “In the acclaimed new movie Dallas Buyers Club, McConaughey plays real-life cowboy Ron Woodroof, who was diagnosed with HIV in 1985 and given a month to live — but fought for dignity, acceptance, and living life to the fullest. We are privileged to present Matthew McConaughey with an award that honors his extraordinary and versatile talent, the 2014 Desert Palm Achievement Award for acting.”

Previous recipients include Jeff Bridges, Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis, Colin Firth, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sean Penn and Brad Pitt.
This award is just the latest accolade McConaughey has received for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, which many awards experts are saying could earn him a best actor Oscar nomination. He previously won the acting honor at the 2013 Hollywood Film Awards.
Focus Features’ Dallas Buyers Club, co-starring Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner, is currently playing in select theaters.
