Women in Film’s Crystal & Lucy Awards are a big night for women in Hollywood and prove how far they have come in the entertainment industry. But it was also a very big night for the Italian luxury label MaxMara, who dressed countless stars in extremely diverse looks. From young honoree Chloe Moretz in a black off-shoulder puffed-sleeve dress to Meryl Streep in a youthful looking camel-colored dress, to WIF recipient Christina Applegate in a gorgeous red peplum dress (in which she looked her absolute best ever), MaxMara had one hell of a fashion night.
Fashion power at a female power event. Totally appropriate.
MaxMara also dressed the evening’s host, Jenna Elfman, (in a chic black dress with an illusion neckline), media mogul Bonnie Hammer in a slim lace sheath, Marcia Gay Harden in a yellow Grecian gown, as well as Cobie Smulders, presenter Diahann Carroll and even Cloris Leachman. And what’s kind of amazing is one would never have known it! All of the women looked wildly different.
Streep most often wears black, so seeing her present Viola Davis her award while wearing a camel-colored dress was a surprise – and a good one. It lightened up Streep’s whole look and made her appear young and fresh. Moretz, who is the MaxMara “Face of the Future” this year, wore one of the evening’s most fashion-forward looks: off-shoulder black with big puffed sleeves, and the new over-the-knee length for fall. With her hair puffed up and teased, it was a very “Belle du Jour” style look.

Applegate’s look was also pretty amazing – a red peplum dress that was incredibly chic, very now, and her blond hair flatteringly braided into a close-to-the-head look.
Davis, the big honoree of the evening, wore a black strapless MaxMara knee-length dress, but the dress unfortunately did not fit her. Her bust was popping out of the strapless top, which was relatively inappropriate for the evening, which was all about power and the place Davis has attained in her career. She even tugged at her top, trying to pull it up, when she took the stage. But then again, Davis attended one of the awards season events in an impossibly low cut gown – so she’s clearly trying to give somebody – producers? – a message.
