Angelou died last Wednesday at her home in Winston-Salem at age 86. She was known throughout the world as a literary pioneer and champion of civil rights and began teaching at Wake Forest in 1982, after she first visited the university to read her work.
Saturday’s service is private, but Wake Forest is streaming it online at go.wfu.edu/angeloumemorial.
The school says Angelou’s family will be planning additional events in other cities across the country. That information will be released later.
