Medium star Ruby Lewis has been cast as the leading lady for Paramour, Cirque du Soleil’s first show for Broadway, the circus troupe on Friday confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Ruby is the kind of young actress theater producers dream of discovering. Her powerhouse voice, electrifying dancing and masterful acting are going to leave Paramour audiences in awe,” Cirque du Soliel’s president and managing director Scott Zeiger said Friday in a statement.
Zeiger last year launched a new theatrical division for Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil, which has built an international entertainment juggernaut on the strength of its traditional circus arts performed in big-top tents and arenas. Lewis’ TV credits include Brothers & Sisters, Hart of Dixie and Rules of Engagement, while also appearing in U.S. touring editions of Gypsy, Grease and We Will Rock You.
She will also front a 38-member company of actors, dancers, aerialists, acrobats and circus arts performers. Directed by Philippe Decoufle, Paramour is set in Hollywood’s Golden Age and follows a beautiful young poet forced to choose between love and art.
It will begin previews on April 16 before its May 25 opening at the Lyric Theater. Paramour’s Broadway run coincides with Cirque’s upcoming revival of The Wiz, also for the 2016-2017 season, with NBC to debut a live TV production of the musical on Dec. 3, 2016.
