Donald Duck Spotted at Gucci, and More You Missed From Men’s Fashion Week Milan

This weekend was all about the men — and we’re not just talking about Father’s Day and Trainwreck actor LeBron James’ big win for Cleveland.

In Milan, the guys were hitting the runway for Men’s Fashion Week, sporting designs inspired by some of music’s late great style icons, including Prince and Jim Morrison, as well as a few more lighthearted references to Disney.

Jeremy Scott isn’t the only designer with a soft spot for nostalgia. Gucci’s Alessandro Michele gave a nod to everyone’s favorite animated duck, Donald, (sorry, Daffy) with a sweater vest and an embroidered jacket featuring the lisping bird’s visage. Michele’s good friend/Oscars date Jared Leto sat front row at the Milan show, wearing one of the brand’s new DIY bomber jackets emblazoned with a green “J.” The #GucciDIY project, which launched this month in Milan with customizable bomber and denim jackets, is coming soon to more locations.

Never-Heard-Before Prince Tracks Set the Mood at Versace

At Versace, the super-buff shirtless models weren’t the only things grabbing attention. Unreleased Prince songs on the soundtrack ruled the post-show buzz. Given Donatella Versace’s close relationship with the late singer, it comes as no surprise that her collection, which included ruffled blouses and head-to-toe purple looks, was directly inspired by the “Kiss” singer’s iconic style. Versace told the New York Times that Prince regularly sent her music, including the never-before-heard tracks. “He sent me those songs five months ago,” she said. “He sent me music all the time. People look for the vault — I am the vault!”

There was no shortage of celeb spawn at Dolce & Gabbana’s music-themed show. Cindy Crawford’s son, Presley Gerber, and Jude Law’s son, Rafferty Law, walked in the show, while Levi Dylan (grandson of Bob Dylan), Brandon Lee (son of Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee), Lucas Jagger (son of Mick Jagger), Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis (son of Daniel Day-Lewis), and Peter Brant Jr. (son of Stephanie Seymour), were spotted front row.

Men (and Women) Are Urban Trekkers at Prada

The heels were made for carrying at Prada’s show. Walking in flats, the women — who joined the men on the runway — carried bags dangling their spare heels. The men carried stuffed-to-the-seams backpacks, which also had dress shoes attached. We can only imagine that the styling decision was a play off the trend of commuters carrying their fancier footwear to work. Either that, or Miuccia Prada’s is trying to make designer shoes the new bag charm.

Raf Simons Shares Collection Inspired by Famed Photographer Robert Mapplethorpe

All eyes were on former Dior creative director Raf Simons (who is rumored be taking the reigns at Calvin Klein) who showed his first work since announcing his departure from the French fashion house last year. The collection was inspired by photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (whose work is currently on display at an exhibition at LACMA), as well as fellow ‘60s style icons Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison, and included oversize shirts screen-printed with black and white photos and drapey sweaters and belts worn as chokers.

Fendi’s Swimming Pool Evokes David Hockney

Today (June 20) is the official first day of summer — a fact that Fendi took to heart by staging their spring/summer 2017 show around a swimming pool, complete with a yellow diving board emblazoned with the brand’s name. Models in bucket hats and slides made their way around the white rimmed pool, which bared striking resemblance to American painter David Hockney’s 1970s work, Portrait of Artist (A Pool with Two Figures). It looks like designer Silvia Venturini Fendi, like so many others, was feeling inspired by ‘60s and ‘70s Americana.

Models Go Glamping at Moncler

If there’s a badge for most glam camping look, then Thom Browne most certainly deserves it. The Moncler Gamme Bleu menswear designer outfitted clean-cut models in sharply tailored, utlitarian looks in shades of khaki, navy and army green. With their heavily treaded shoes, neckerchiefs and backpacks  (not to mention, lots and lots of pockets) there was no doubt that these cadets were ready for anything — including the Smokey the Bear look-a-likes that patrolled the runway while carrying red, white and blue shovels. 

Ferragamo (below), too, had a hint of American Boy Scout inspiration in the form of belted khaki jackets and cargo-esque trousers.
