ROME — The Giffoni Film Fest said Wednesday its 2014 edition will honor Meryl Streep with a special tribute and host a marathon of Marvel-related productions.
The festival, which will hold its 44th edition from July 18-27, 2014, traditionally unveils its full lineup each June. But artistic director Claudio Gubitosi released a few of the anticipated highlights of the next fest, along with a recap of some of the stats from the 2013 edition.

Giffoni is Europe’s oldest and largest event focused on young movie and music lovers. It is based in the picturesque village of Giffoni Valle Piana, south of Rome.
The festival said the last edition attracted a record 200,000 festival-goers over 11 days, including 3,300 members of its popular jury, representing 41 countries. It attracted more than 500 national and international journalists, and online the web site attracted more than 1.3 million hits — a dramatic increase compared to the previous year.
Officials said the event is the most talked about film festival on Facebook surpassing even major mainstream festivals.

Next year, the festival — which will use the theme “Be Different” — will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 125th anniversary of the birth of Charlie Chaplin.
The festival did not say whether Pope Francis might attend the event. At least year’s event, Gubitosi attracted headlines when he said he’d like to invite the new pontiff to attend in 2014.
Streep, who had previously attended Giffoni in 2001, will be honored with the Giffoni Fellowship Award. The Marvel marathon, meanwhile, will center upon a special night of superheroes Gubitosi said would include world premiere films as well as an exhibition of drawings related to the parent company of many of the world’s best known superheroes.
